What a DOT physical is and what to bring

A DOT physical is the medical examination required before you can drive a commercial vehicle. It looks at vision, hearing, blood pressure, and the conditions that affect whether it is safe for you to be behind the wheel of a truck or a bus. It is not a general checkup, and passing it is not the same as being told you are healthy.

Bring photo identification, a list of every medication you take with the name of who prescribes it, and your glasses, contacts, or hearing aids if you use them. If you manage diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, or a heart condition, bring the most recent readings or the letter from the provider who treats it. Missing paperwork is the most common reason a driver is sent home to come back another day.

The short version: come with your medications, your corrective lenses, and any recent numbers from a specialist, and the exam is usually finished in one visit.

How it works

How your exam works here

From booking to walking out with signed paperwork.

  1. Book your exam

Book online or call the clinic. Tell us which exam you need and who is asking for it, so we set aside the right amount of time.

  2. Bring your paperwork

Photo identification, the form your employer or agency gave you, and a list of your medications. Bring your glasses, contacts, or hearing aids if you use them.

  3. The examination

Vision, hearing, blood pressure, and a physical exam, plus any blood work, urinalysis, or EKG the form requires. Those are done here rather than sent out.

  4. Your forms, signed

You leave with your paperwork completed. If something needs a specialist's letter first, we tell you exactly what to get and who to ask for it.

Payment for physicals

Employment and DOT exams are usually not billed to health insurance, because an employer or a licensing rule is asking for them rather than a medical problem. Call us and we will tell you what your exam costs before you come in. Pre-operative clearance is different: it is part of your medical care, and it is usually billed to your plan.

Before you book

Questions patients ask

  • How long does a physical take?

Plan on about 30 to 45 minutes. If your form needs blood work or an EKG, those are done here during the same visit, so it does not turn into a second trip.

  • What do I need to bring?

Photo identification, the form your employer or agency gave you if you have one, a list of your medications with who prescribes them, and your glasses, contacts, or hearing aids if you use them.

  • Will my insurance pay for it?

Usually not for an employment or DOT exam, since those are requested by an employer or a licensing rule rather than for a medical problem. Call us at 786-536-2414 and we will tell you the cost before you book.

  • What happens if I do not pass the DOT exam?

You are told exactly why and what would change it. Drivers are often certified for a shorter period, or need a letter from the provider who treats a condition. We tell you what to get, and you come back to finish.

  • Can our company send employees regularly?

Yes. We set up accounts for local businesses so scheduling and billing run through one point of contact instead of being arranged one employee at a time. Call us at 786-536-2414 to set it up.

  • Do you do school or sports physicals?

Only for adults 19 and older. We do not see children or teenagers. If you need a physical for someone younger, call us and we will point you to a pediatric practice in the area.
